Thomas Jones and Sarah Venables

1-Thomas Jones↑ was born about 1814. Thomas was a convict. He married convict Sarah Venables↑ on 1 Aug 1840 in Longford, Tasmania. Sarah was born about 1815 in Hertfordshire, England and died on 16 Aug 1883 in Longford, Tasmania aged about 68.

In February 1834 and again in April 1835 Sarah was tried at the Old Bailey for crimes of simple grand larceny. She was indicted for stealing several items from her master including three aprons valued at one shilling; two pairs of stockings worth two shillings; one petticoat with a value of one shiling; and one thimble worth sixpence. At the age of just 18 Sarah Venables was transported for 14 years. Sarah sailed on board the Hector, landing in Van Diemen's Land on 11 June 1835. Sarah was a housemaid from Hertfordshire, having a florid complexion and a small round head with the initials TC tattooed on her left arm.

Her future husband Thomas Jones was not far behind, having been sentenced in 1835 for "stealing from a person" and arrived in Australia in 1836. Both were assigned to work for Thomas and Edward Archer at Longford. Thomas was a blacksmith , 5'5" and 3/4, complexion brown, with blue eyes, large head and dark brown hair. No Whiskers, high forehead, large chin, long nose, with a man and horse tattooed on the inside of his right arm

Thomas was granted his Ticket of Leave in 1840 and was pardoned in 1842, in which year Sarah gained her Ticket of Leave. They married so on 8 August 1840 at St John's Church, Longford. They had five children:

2-George Jones was born about Mar 1840 in Tasmania and died on 20 Jan 1914 in Underwood, Tasmania aged about 73. George married widow Elizabeth Wheeler, daughter of James Brown and Agnes Willis Cairns, on 19 Oct 1870 in Longford, Tasmania. Witnesses were Samuel Miller and Harriet Jones. Elizabeth was born on 28 Sep 1841 in Evandale, Tasmania. They had six children: George Leslie James, Emily Sarah Agnes, Florence Elizabeth Marion, Hilda Maria, Percy Harold and Reuben George.

COSTELLO— COLE. A wedding that attracted considerable interest was celebrated in the Lower Barrington Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 8, by the Rev. W. Heaven. The bride. Miss Carrie Cole, is the youngest daughter of Mr. H. Cole, and Mr. Vic. Costello, the bridegroom, is the second youngest son of Mr. Richard Costello, both of Lower Barrington. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a trained robe of crepe-de-chene, and a becoming wreath of orange blossom held her veil in position. She carried a shower bouquet. Miss Violet Cole was in attendance as bridesmaid, and wore a gown of pink crepe-de-chene, with hat to match. The little maid of honor, Lily Ivory, wore a dainty frock of white silk and carried the cushion for the bride to kneel on. Mr. W. Cole supported the bridegroom as best man. Later a dinner was served at the residence of the bride's parents, about 100 guests being present. Mr. Heaven, in proposing the health of the bride and bridegroom, presented the young couple with a silver teapot from members of the church. Other presents were numerous and costly. Mr. and Mrs. Costello's future home will be at Lower Barrington.
