OBITUARY MR. WILLIAM JONES.

Mr. William Jones died at his residence, Westwood, Trevallyn, yesterday.

Deceased, who was the eldest son of Mr. Britton Jones, was born at Franklin Village, on March 14, 1825. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Mr. Edward McIntosh, whose place of business stood where Messrs. Scott and Griffiths brewery is now. After serving a part of his apprenticeship in this colony Mr. Jones left for Victoria about 1841 with Mr. McIntosh (the most successful boat builder of his day). Mr. Jones pulled in numerous four, five, and six-oared whaleboat races, and was proud to say he was never beaten. In 1843 he returned to Tasmania, and marrying a Miss Saggers, settled on the East Tamar, where he resided for only a year.

He then went to live at Warrnambool, in Victoria, for some four years, and then took a ship load of produce and portable houses to the then new rush in California. There Mr. Jones had some stirring and unpleasant experiences of Lynch law, by whose authority one of the party of Tasmanians lost his life at a few moments notice before Mr. Jones's eyes. Owing to the unsettled condition of California, deceased soon determined to return to Australia, though offered strong inducements to remain, seeing numerous opportunities for larger and easily-acquired fortunes on every hand. In 1851 he returned to Tasmania, and settled at Westwood, near Carrick, working his farm on model lines. Whilst at West- wood Mr. Jones interested himself in ploughing and ploughing matches, and was successful in winning no less than eight prizes and champion cups. Whilst at Westwood Mr. John Millar actually formed the road to that estate from the Westbury road, and Mr. Jones was a member of that Road Trust from its inception till the date of his leaving in 1874.

In 1871 deceased lost his wife, and in 1872 he married a daughter of the late Mr. Samuel Davis, of West- wood. In 1874 Mr. Jones removed to Freshwater Point, where he devoted attention to sheep farming and breeding, and owing to the discovery of gold at Brandy Creek about this time, found plenty of outlet for his produce. On the expiry of his lease in 1891, Mr. Jones contracted some chest troubles, which brought him to Launceston for treatment, and the whole eight years of a painful illness was borne without a murmur. He leaves a widow, four daughters, and seven sons to mourn their loss.

NINETY-TWO YEARS OLD Mrs. William Jones On Wednesday, July 16, at "Westwood," Trevallyn, Mrs. William Jones celebrated her 92nd birthday. A member of a Tasmanian pioneering family, Mrs. Jones is the last of the well- known Davis family, of Westwood, near Carrick. She is the granddaughter of the late Colonel Rees who came to Tasmania and was placed in charge of soldiers in the early days of settlement. For her 92nd birthday Mrs. Jones had many visitors throughout the day. Her daughters, Mrs. F. Hughes (Devonport), Mrs. R. Lovett (Trevallyn), and Mrs. Norman Hawkins (Lefroy) spent the day with her. Her room was a bower of spring bulbs, roses, scarlet carnations, blue irises, violets, and daphne. More than a dozen charmingly arranged posies were received, and telegrams and letters of good wishes. An assortment of gifts included three birthday cakes, decorated in pale pink. The family presented a rose-pink chintz eiderdown, and Mrs. Jones received a shoulder cape, mittens, and cap of soft pink wool from her grandchildren. The nonagenarian is very proud of her grandsons serving in the A.I.F. and R.A.A.F. Her descendants owe much to her good example and teaching. Mrs. Jones resided at Westwood for more than 45 years, and has seen much of the growth and progress of Launceston. She still takes a great interest in her home and garden, although she has been confined to her bed for the past four years. She is cared for by a married daughter and niece. Mrs. Jones was an active member of the Red Cross Society in the last war.
