Born in Malagawatch, he was a son of the late Alexander and Mary Ann (Roberts) MacKinnon. Dan Charlie was a retired equipment operator with the Dept. of Transportation. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary (MacDonald); daughters, Ann Marie Johnstone (Albert Mansfield), Port Hawkesbury; Carol Lee MacKinnon, Malagawatch; son, Kevin (Marie Power), Port Hawkesbury; sisters, Charlotte Ross, Tatamagouche; Margie MacQueen, Sydney River. A believer in the maxim that the only way to achieve success was to begin at the bottom and learn the hard way, Mr. James Hokin, (86), who died in Pirie Hospital, had been in the service of South Australian Railways for 47 years when he retired 19 years ago.

Leaving school at an early age, he began his apprenticeship in a fitting shop at Castlemaine (Victoria), where he was born, and had "served his time" before his eighteenth birthday. A competent tradesman for his years, he had no difficulty in obtaining employment at Mort's Dock, Sydney.

Illness prevented him from furthering his knowledge of marine fitting, and he returned to Castlemaine and his old job. He had been there only a brief time when his father, the late Mr. Charles Hokin. a carpenter by trade, decided to seek a new home at Port Augusta. James Hokin, came with his family to South Australia in 1879 and began work as a fireman on ballast trains used in the construction of railways north of Port Augusta. The following year he left the North, but continued firing on railway construction work at Naracoorte, on the Melbourne line. The new line to Melbourne had been completed to Wolseley when he terminated his employment with the construction contractors and returned with his bride (formerly Miss Mary Munro, whom he had married at Naracoorte) to Port Augusta.

Started From "Scratch"

In 1881 he entered the service of South Australian Railways. Instead of applying for a position as fireman, for which he was fully qualified, he chose to "start from scratch" as a cleaner. That was the beginning of nearly half a century on the iron road. Mr. Hokin cleaned engines for 18 months before he was "sent out" firing. After three years with the shovel he received his driver's ticket in 1886 and continued as a driver until he retired 19 years ago at the age of 67.Mr. and Mrs. Hokin lived at Port Augusta for about six years, and then moved to Quorn, where they resided 28 years before going to Peterborough. They were there nearly 10 years, and Mr. Hokin retired there. Even after his retirement Mr. Hokin was active and still a handy man with tools. He remained in perfect health until about 18 months ago. It is about seven months since he and his wife came to Pirie to live with a daughter, and Mr. Hokin spent four months of that time in hospital.

Mr. Hokin left a widow, three sons, and two daughters—Messrs. Harry (railways inspector at Islington), Walter (dentist, of Adelaide), and Alexander (schoolteacher, Croydon), and Mesdames A. Murdoch (Pirie) and J. Crawford (Peterborough). Pastor A. S. Butler, of Adelaide, conducted funeral obsequies in Pirie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs. A. Lang staff, S. Sweet, A. Ford, and C. In the course of a letter to his mother, Mrs George Ferrier, Private Percy Lee, who has been wounded, writes from England:- "I would like to see Phyllis (the pony), and I hope to some day; the war cannot last for ever, and I could not go home until it is over. I am here to do my bit with the rest of them. I should love to go home for a trip, but still this job must be finished; duty first before pleasure. We want all our men to help to finish the war. If it is God's will, we will be spared to return to our loved ones again.

Donald Campbell and Flora Maclean married and settled at Evandale, Tasmania where they reared a family of 8 sons. In the 1860's they removed to Hawkes Bay in the South Island, New Zealand. There the sons were joined at their sheep station by a cousin, Allan Maclean of the Crossapol family.

Colin prospered and returned to Scotland. When his Campbell cousins became bankrupt he bought the two ends of Coll from them, Caolas and Cornaig. This was the Colin who gave refuge in his east end property to the families evicted from the centre of the island in 1861. Most of the Sunapol family pioneered in Australia and settled there in well established positions. One of the daughters, Flora, married Donald Maclean of the Arileod family who came out to Australia later.

They had ten children: Flora, Alexander, Donald, Archibald, Malcolm, Donald, Duncan, John, Elizabeth and Catherine.

 MR. NEIL CAMPBELL  (1860 - 1939)

The death occurred at Geelong yesterday of Mr. Neil Campbell, aged 79 years, retired estate agent. Mr. Campbell, who was born in the Geelong district, was educated at Geelong College, and he then went on to his father's station property at Inverleigh, and later to Barunah. He made a close study of merino sheep breeding, and for many years led a party of wool students from the Gordon Institute of Technology to the Victorian Sheep breeders' show. When a youth, Mr. Campbell joined the firm of George  Synott and Co., and later entered into business as an estate agent. He was president of the agricultural society for several years, and for 10 years was secretary of the Geelong Racing Club. Mr. Campbell was a member of the Geelong City Council for 10 years, and Mayor for two years. He was greatly interested in the agitation for the Geelong Harbour Trust and the present Geelong racecourse. At sport he was a keen polo player and golfer. 

Neil married Eliza Margaret Simson, daughter of Reverend Charles Simson and Mary Ann Wilson. Eliza was born on 25 Feb 1861 in Hobart, Tasmania. They had four children: Neil Leslie, Mary Eleanor, Alion Anne McArthur and Carleen Simson.
