Article by Betty MacDougall  (1994 )

THE JOHN DUNSCOMBE.  Two of Flora McLean's brothers, Hugh and Neil, had taken up the seafaring life and each secured his Master's Certificate. Hugh traded for some years in Australian waters, was convinced of the excellent opportunities there and bought land in Tasmania. On returning to Scotland, he persuaded his parents to venture with him and so a unique episode in emigration took place - an entire family, fully equipped with provisions, household effects, seeds and tools, with timber and fittings for a new house, uprooted themselves to pioneer in a new land.  The sailor sons bought a small schooner, the John Dunscombe, of 88 tons. Their eventual voyage started September 16th. 1832 from Greenock and a favourable passage was made. The first port of call was St. Helena for a supply of fresh water. They also visited Tristan da Cunha and then on to Cape Town on December, 15th.

On his way home from Australia to gather his family, Hugh MacLean had noticed there was a great dearth of coal in the Cape so he used all available space in his ship for this cargo which he sold for a good price and replaced it with a cargo of wine that would be very much in demand in Australia.  The Customs Records in the State Archives of Hobart, list the John Dunscombe as arriving from Greenock, 10th. February, 1833.  Master: Hugh MacLean  Crew: Neil MacLean (brother to Hugh), John McMillan, Hugh McCormick, Angus McFadden, Daniel MacLean (probably Hugh's brother Donald) and Henry Button.  Passengers: Allan and Hannah MacLean (the parents) with Malcolm, Jessie, Mary, Catherine, Lilias and Ann.

As Tasmania was a convict colony, controls were strict so this list should be accurate.  A house was built at Talisker and the family set to work their land. All their ventures turned out well but despite the splendid climate, Tasmania was not a pleasant place to live in. It was said that with being in a convict settlement, the door was never opened after dark without a shotgun in hand. It was not long before the family removed to a more pleasing environment on the mainland of Australia, in the Melbourne area. Hugh and Neil continued their careers in shipping with many exciting adventures including a spell of captivity when captured by Maoris in New Zealand.  The subsequent history of all the family is well recorded and many descendants have returned to visit Coll, the land of their roots.

MCLEANS OF MULL.
A FAMILY CENTENARY.

One hundred years ago today the schooner John Dunscombe (88 tons) made fast to the wharf at Hobart, 148 days out from Glasgow, with a mixed company of MacLeans and Mackinnons all from the Inner Hebrides-the MacLeans from Mull and Coll and their cousins, the Mackinnons, from Skye whence a little later came an- other of the first overlanders and pioneer pastoralists, Lauchlan Mackinnon, who joined Edward Wilson in "The Argus" in 1852.

The skipper on the journey to Hobart was Hugh MacLean, the mate was Neil MacLean, also a master. Their father, Allan and three Mackinnons formed the crew, and the passengers were Mrs Allan MacLean, her five daughters and the remaining two sons, Malcolm and Donald. Allan MacLean settled first at Talisker, some few miles south of Launceston, but Batman and Gellibrand's Port Phillip Association having forced Governor Bourke to make land available at Melbourne, Hugh MacLean crossed the strait, and at Melbourne's first land sale on June 1, 1837, he purchased allotment No 4, block 13, where now Hicks, Atkinson, and Sons Pty Ltd., formerly Mowbray, Rowan, and Lush, have their shop. He also bought allotment 3, block 3 at William's Town, where later, in the words of the advertisement of Fawkner's manuscript newspaper, the "Melbourne Advertiser," he kept a boat and two men in readiness for the purpose of crossing and recrossing passengers between William's Town and the opposite beach.

Hugh MacLean, who had traded for some years with the John Dunscombe, enlarged his ideas. In 1839 he acquired the brig Britannia and set off in her for Sydney. That was the last heard of him. The brig was lost off the Ninety Mile Beach Malcolm. MacLean established himself at Strathallan, just beyond Preston, on the Plenty road, where Neil MacLean in 1842 took up 1,700 acres. Here Allan MacLean was buried in 1843, followed four years later by Hannah, his wife. Malcolm's son, James Stewart MacLean, was born here.

After attending Scotch College, then under Mr Lawson, in 1850 he went to England to complete his education. In 1864 he went to New Zealand in the employ of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, founded by his uncles, Donald MacLean and Mathew Holmes. Having returned to Victoria he still lives, a sturdy representative of the old Highland Viking clan of Gillean, at Annuello, with his son, Keith. Another son, O. A. MacLean, lives at Kyabram.

Donald was one of the proprietors of the Two Ends of Coll. He emigrated to Van Diemens Land  on the Skelton in 1820. There the sons were joined at their sheep station by a cousin, Allan Maclean of the Crossapol family.

This was the Colin who gave refuge in his east end property to the families evicted from the centre of the island in 1861. Born at Dalness, he was the eldest son of the late Allan Mackinnon, of Dalness, Evandale. He was educated at the Longford Grammar School under the late Rev. David Boyd, and on completion of his studies he went to Victoria, where he engaged in pastoral pursuits. He purchased the Kilcunda cattle station, but owing to his health breaking down was obliged to sell out and return to Tasmania. He then went to reside at Strath, in the Hagley district, which estate he inherited from his father. Nine years later he bought the estate of Mountford, where he resided until the time of his death. He was an enthusiastic breeder of Merino sheep and Hereford cattle. Also about thirty years ago he evolved the type of sheep now known as Corriedales, and they have been inbred ever since, no outside blood ever having been used. The wool is of a very high character, having sold in Melbourne four years ago up to 15¼d. per lb. Mr. Mackinnon has always been very successful with his stock at the various shows. He has always taken a keen interest in public affairs, and was a member of the Longford municipal council for some years, president and vice-president of the Northern Agricultural Society, president of the Western Agricultural Society, and a justice of the peace for upwards of thirty years. As a magistrate he was painstaking and thorough, always inclining to the merciful side. The late Mr. Mackinnon's judgment was sound, and his influence for good was felt in his community. He was a consistent and liberal supporter of all charitable objects, and ever ready to help any deserving individual. He was married in 1870 to Miss Anna Ralston, daughter of the late Mr. John Ralston, of Logan Falls, Evandale, who survives him. He leaves a family of three sons and two daughters.

Flora was christened on 4 Feb 1813 in Sunipol, Isle of Mull, Argyllshire, Scotland and died on 16 Nov 1901 in Strathconan, South Canterbury, New Zealand at age 88.

DONALD McLean, of Strathconan, New Zealand, whose death in his 82nd year has been recorded, was one of the earliest Victorian settlers. Mr. McLean was one of a large family , who in the year 1832 left Scotland to settle in Tasmania. They made the passage in a small schooner of their own, the John Dunscombe, of 80 tons. Including a stay of two weeks at the Cape of Good Hope, the little craft made the passage to Hobart in four months.
All on board, passengers and crew, except a sailing-master, were McLeans. The family went to Launceston, and there leased the Talisker Estate from the late Major McLeod. As soon as he heard of the projected settlement of Victoria (then Port Phillip), Mr. McLean determined to go there. On the 27th January, 1837, he landed in Melbourne (then called Glenelg), a settlement of few small houses. He settled at once on the Merri Creek (then and some years afterwards called McLean's Creek). He immediately got some land into cultivation, and was always pleased to be able to say that he was the first man who reaped a corn crop in Victoria. J. P. Fawkner had a crop sown before McLean's, but as kangaroos destroyed it, it was never reaped.
He also used to tell with great minuteness of fight he witnessed between two native tribes where Collins street now is. In 1844 McLean moved to the Geelong district, and was for some years a tenant of the late Mr. W. C. Haines. In 1848 he bought the Glendarrach Estate. Whilst there he imported the first pure-bred Ayrshire cattle to Victoria. In 1859 he paid a short visit to New Zealand, landing at the Bluff, and going through Dunedin to Oamaru. He was so much pleased with the country that he made up his mind to settle there, which he did in 1864.
