Andrew Oliver Young
3-Andrew Oliver Young was born on 6 Dec 1870 in Longford, Tasmania, was christened on 20 Aug 1877 in Creekton, Tasmania, died on 20 Jun 1894 in Southland Hospital, Invercargill, New Zealand at age 23, and was buried in the Wallacetown Cemetery.
Around the time of his 21st birthday in December 1891 Andrew travelled to New Zealand where he worked as a farm labourer, probably for Scottish immigrant farmer John Cockburn at Waianiwa, Southland. Andrew contracted tuberculosis and in September 1893 he wrote his will (below) while in Southland Hospital. It was there that he died on 20 June 1894. His death was reported in the Southland Daily News:
Young—On the 20th inst, at Southland Hospital, Andrew Young, aged 23 years
and again in The Launceston Daily Telegraph Tuesday 10 Jul 1984 Page 2
Deaths YOUNG—On the 20th June, at the Southland Hospital, Invercargill, New Zealand, Andrew Oliver, youngest son of William S young, aged 23 years.
He was buried in the nearby Wallacetown Cemetery. The cemetery records say he was possibly buried in Block 1, Plot 12 but this is unlikely because also buried in this plot are James Young and his wife Janet Young nee Deuchars who do not appear to be related. The headstone inscription cannot currently be read due to its condition:
