Today I was thinking of my grandmothers birthday and wondering how old she would be tomorrow. I decided to google her name Ira Pertzel in the off chance details may be regestered.  To my delight I found this family history website. I am a decendent of  Walter Thomas Dobson, Ira Pertzel (Dobson) , Lorna Burkinshaw (Pertzel), Tracey Hartley (Burkinshaw). I found this history wonderful and would like to thank and acknowledge those people who have compiled this story

Kind Regards

Tracey

I think I can answer a query that you write about on your website. You state that Thomas & Hannah Goss (nee Burroughs) 's first son was called Makum, born 13th May 1800 and buried in 1834 in Tottington. You have queried whether this is the correct spelling of his name. I believe it is, as Hannah Burroughs parents were Thomas Burroughs and Elizabeth Makum/Makeham/Macum (these are the 3 spellings of this surname that I have found so far), so I believe that Hannah named her first son after her mother's maiden name.

I am descended from Thomas & Elizabeth Burroughs/Burrows (nee Makum/Makeham/Macum)

Zoe Burrows

Comment:Hello, my name is Jacinta Holloway, I came across this website by accident and have found it very interesting to look through as I am (I think) a great-great granddaughter to Samuel Walker. My father is Ian Holloway, Grandfather is David Holloway and Elsie Holloway (nee Walker) was my Great grandmother and was a lady that we all loved and looked up to very much she unfortunately passed away recently having lived a wonderful and long life, age 96. She regularly told us the story of her planting potatoes with her father and other stories. I thought as you seem to have put a great deal of time and effort in to this page you may find this interesting.
Kind regards

Comment:HI. I was interested in Millicent Lee she married Carl Elton Sherriff and then Arthur Wyatt. Error - his mother is mentioned as sitting next to Alice in 1870's her name was not Martha but in fact Clara Jane Wyatt (Nee Coleman)b 1861 I am related to Arthur Wyatt - His name was Arthur William De Lindley Wyatt and I have the De Lindley in my name too except I don't know where this comes from. All the other De Lindleys in this line (through the Colemans) died out and I was wondering if any of Millicents descendants might have any recollection about this name. It is important to me to know this. Any help is appreciated Thanks Carolyn

As far as I know, A Goodly Heritage has been out of print for over 20 years.  There are certainly no new copies for sale.  Used Tasmanian family history books are routinely sold on ebay and there is at least one Launceston and one Hobart second hand bookseller specialising in local history.   That said, I have never seen one offered for sale.  The book was originally priced at about $50 and one in good condition would probably fetch several times that today.

While I understand the appeal of the book, I would point out that all of its content (plus more) is available from this website.  Copies of the book are available in the Devonport, Longford, Launceston and Hobart state libraries and loan arrangements are probably available to most interstate libraries.

Best wishes
Andrew

Comment:Hi, Great site and very interesting work! My name is Matthew Goss and I am the sixth son of Harold John Goss and Irene Marion Goss (nee Chisholm). Harry, died in 1978 at the age of 50 from a brain tumour and was the son of Harold Arthur Goss, an Anzac who was born in Westbury Tasmania and who listed his mother Amelia Goss as his next of kin when enlisting in 1917. Harold Arthur's father had died on 24 March 1914 - a man named John Makones Goss (I have since discovered that this is a rendering of Makim which I note you have explained in some detail on your site - "Makum"). It is assumed John Makones Goss (or John Makim Goss) is a grandson of Thomas and Hannah, but I cannot see from which line. He was born in Tottingham in August 1848 and married Amelia Lawson on 31 October 1877 in Westbury Tasmania. I note that a lot of Samuel's sons fought in WW1 and that they all list their origin as Barrington Tasmania. I assume these are cousins. Any further information you can provide would be greatly appreciated, and I hope that this information adds a little to your painstaking work. I note that you have no listed information about Makum Goss's marital status or if he had children before dying in 1834 - this would mean that he can't have been John Makim's father. If I can work out who John Makim's father is I would be extremely satisfied - perhaps he was given a middle name in honour of an uncle who had died before his birth. Please feel free to email me. Kind Regards, Matt Goss (not the cyclist).

Comment:Further to previous. Note that John Makim Goss was the son of the other Thomas (born 2 March 1807) and Martha Johnson (married on Tottington on 26 Feb 1837). This Thomas died on 19 April 1872. I hope this fleshes out a bit more of your ancestry. I note that my source identifies his sister as Sarah Walker who died on 3 December 1888.

Comment:Just a message out to everyone researching Thomas Goss and Hannah Burroughs. Hannah is the daughter of Thomas Burroughs and Elizabeth Makum, she was baptised the 30 Jun 1779 at Tottington Norfolk. Her parents were married on the 13 May 1760 at Tottington. Thomas her father died on the 20 May 1793 at Tottington, his wife Elizabeth died 6 May 1826 at Tottington. She is the daughter of William Makum and his wife Elizabeth. Re Thomas Burroughs he is the son of Thomas Burroughs and Mary Thain. Re Thomas Goss, he was baptised on the 8th Jun 1767 at Tottington he s the son of John Goss and Mary Hutchinson. He is one of 5 children of theirs, Flora Goss, Elizabeth Goss, Mary and Henry Goss. John Goss is the son of Richard Goss and Ann Roberson (Robinson) Hope this helps everyone confused about the Goss - Burroughs family trees. Regards Rod Piper

Comment:Re the Makim name in the families. This is from Thomas Goss whom married Elizabeth Makum Hannah named her son Makum Goss after her mother Elisabeth Makum. He son John Makim Goss was named the same. Thomas Goss whom married Martha Johnson also had a son John Makim Goss after the same name sequence of Macum, Makim etc. This is why some people have the wrong parents of Hannah Burroughs, I hope this corrects this on all family trees.
