Family of William Austin

2-Thomas Austin was born on 28 Apr 1799 in Armely, England and died on 16 Feb 1861 in Holebeck, Leeds, London at age 61. Thomas married Sarah Sowry, daughter of Benjamin Sowry and Sarah Cliff, on 29 Jul 1823 in St Peters, Leeds, England. Sarah was born on 13 Jan 1799 in Farnley, Yokshire, England and died on 7 Dec 1877 in Lower Wortley, Leeds, England at age 78. They had five children: James, Maria, John, Thomas and William.

3-James Austin was born about 1822 in Wortley by Leeds, Yorkshire, England and died in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. He was a brick moulder.  James married Margaret Ann Stokoe in Sep 1849 in Chester Le Street, Durham, England. Margaret was born about 1830 in Jarrow, Northumberland, England. They had eight children: Edward, Sarah, Jane, James, William, Mary Elizabeth, John and Ambrosine.

4-Edward Austin was born on 28 Jun 1852 in Wortley and died on 2 Nov 1914 in Timaru, New Zealand at age 62. Edward married Elizabeth Chambers, daughter of William Chambers and Dorothy Matthews. Elizabeth was born in 1852 in King Sydenham, Christchurch, New Zealand and died in 1933 in King Sydenham, Christchurch, New Zealand at age 81. They had six children: Margaret Ann, William, James, Sarah, George Edward and Ada Florance.

5-Margaret Ann Austin was born on 17 May 1876 in Bradley, Durham, England. Margaret married Thomas James Fraser on 3 Jan 1900 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

5-William Austin was born on 23 Oct 1877 in Gateshead, Lower Thames, Durham, England, died on 21 May 1938 in Currie Beach, Lefroy in an accident at age 60, and was buried on 23 May 1938 in Carr Villa Cemetery, Launceston. William married Mary Elizabeth Parmenter on 21 Feb 1906.  They had one daughter: Violet Isabel.

6-Violet Isabel Austin was born in 1907 in New Zealand and died in New Zealand.

William next married Jessie May McHugh, daughter of John McHugh and Elizabeth May Young, on 15 Dec 1909 in Devonport. Jessie was born on 29 May 1890 in Ulverstone and died on 23 Jun 1956 in Launceston at age 66. They had six children: William Edward, Eric Frank, Arnold Wilfred, Jessie May, Alvin Keith and Andrew John.

 3-Thomas Austin was born in 1836 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England and died on 19 Sep 1901 in Petane, Hastings, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand at age 62. Thomas married Eliza Butterfield in 1864 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. Eliza was born in 1838 in Tong, Yorkshire, England and died on 12 Jul 1924 in Napier, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand at age 86.

3-William Austin was born on 28 Jul 1839 in Swanbanks, Southowram, Yorkshire, England and died on 14 Apr 1916 in Brunswick, East Victoria at age 76.

William left England on the Brother's Pride on 25 July 1863, and arrived in Lyttleton N.Z. on 10 Dec. He was an assisted immigrant, the Canterbury Provincial Government paying 4 pounds, 16 shillings of the 13 pound, 6 shilling fare. An epidemic of scarlet fever, typhus and typhoid fever broke out on the ship, killing 46 passengers. Survivors were quarantined at Camp Bay for 28 days. Williams’s occupation was listed as farm labourer.

 In Christchurch William went into partnership with his brother John and fellow passenger Henry Kirk in a brickworks. William married Elizabeth Blackmore in 1869, and they proceeded to have 8 children, 2 of whom died in 1879, 10 day old Sarah and later 21 month old Geoffrey. These deaths affected Elizabeth badly and her health deteriorated until she was admitted to Sunnyside hospital in 1887 with dementia and died in 1891 aged 50.

In 1892 or 1983 at age 53, William decided to settle in Melbourne with his six children. He worked at Hoffman potteries when he first arrived, then in 1904-5 he set up Austin and Sons Pottery in Brunswick. Sons Albert, Arthur and William joined the partnership making salt-glazed stoneware sewerage and drainpipes. In 1896, William married Agnes Cunningham, a 50 year-old widow.

OBITUARY THE LATE MR.. W. AUSTIN. The death occurred suddenly on the 14th inst. of a much respected Brunswick citizen, named William Austin, at his residence, No. 8 Gamble st., East Brunswick, near Nicholson st., at the age of 77 years. Deceased was born at Yorkshire, England, and was the son of Mr Benjamin Austin, brickmaker, of the same place. He arrived in New Zealand about 20 years ago, and with a Mr Kirk carried on a pottery there for over 20 years, under the name of Austin and Kirk. He came to Victoria about 21 years ago and resided successively in Preston, Yarraville, and Edward street, Brunswick. About 13 years ago he commenced a pipe and pottery business in Nicholson street, East Brunswick, under the style of Austin and Sons, and later turned it into a proprietary co., under the name of Austin and Sons Pty. Ltd., which business is still carried on there by his three sons, Albert, Arthur, and William. Deceased took no part in public life and kept very much to himself. In business his word was his bond. He was a man of strong character, and generally achieved anything he set about to do, and in addition he was known as a man of the strictest integrity. In addition to the sons above, deceased left a widow, Agnes, and the following children surviving: - Mrs A. E. Allen (Adelaide), Mrs A. Peach (Ballarat.): the late Mrs W. Kenshole. He was also stepfather of Mrs G. Johnson, Mrs A. Tanner, Robert, Ern-est. Charles and the late Percy Cunningham. He was interred privately in the Coburg Cemetery, on the 15th inst. Mr John Allison, of 291 Sydney rd., Brunswick, undertaker, had charge of the mortuary arrangements and gave complete satisfaction to all.

William married Elizabeth Blackmore on 13 Mar 1869 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Elizabeth was born on 15 Sep 1841 in Filds farm, Devon, England and died on 18 Apr 1891 in Sunnyside Hospital, Christchurch, New Zealand at age 49. They had eight children: Albert Ernest, Ellen Jane, Emily Louisa, Annie, Arthur Blackmore, William, Godfrey Armitage and Sarah Sowry.

4-Albert Ernest Austin was born on 18 Aug 1869 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

4-Ellen Jane Austin was born on 21 May 1871 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

4-Emily Louisa Austin was born on 20 Jun 1872 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

4-Annie Austin was born on 12 Mar 1874 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Annie married Arthur John Peach.  They had a daughter: Rose Emily.

5-Rose Emily Peach. Rose married Edward Victor Whiston.

William next married Agnes Cunningham on 30 May 1896 in Melbourne, Victoria. Agnes died in 1923 in Brunswick, East Victoria.
